Surface conditions will be variable today as a melt freeze crust has formed overnight. The upper pack has been warmed by yesterday’s rain creating moist grains below the surface crust. At upper elevations strong to gale winds have stripped westerly aspects leaving them firm in exposed areas and creating isolated slab on the lee. As we continue into spring be wary of creek crossings at lower elevations which have begun to re open.
Glide cracks have been observed to have grown over the previous few days due to warm temperatures and rainfall. These features are difficult to predict the timing of failure and should be avoided.
Continued strong westerly winds in the alpine have deposited pockets of wind slab on lee slopes.
Warming temperatures and sunshine during the day may result in wet lose activity in steep terrain.
No new observations have been reported recently.
With the freezing level lowering after a period of rain yesterday we can expect a surface crust to have formed on all aspects below 1000 meters. The upper snowpack in the treeline and below is moist at present. In the alpine the westerly half has been stripped in exposed areas. Pockets of wind slab remain on lee aspects.
A high pressure system has come over the country resulting in settled weather. The winds have once again moved to a north west flow lowering the freezing level and remaining light to moderate. We can expect broken sunshine throughout the day.
