Be on the lookout for glide avalanches at lower elevations, as the continued high temperatures are causing the snow to melt. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Higher temperatures than yesterday are forecast for today. During the day, please pay attention to the decrease in snow strength in the upper snowpack. Wet loose snow avalanches can occur even in the forest. Now that the wind has subsided, some of you may climb up to the alpine areas. On ridges and other areas, a very hard Melt-Freeze layer is exposed, so please be careful of slipping and falling.
Positive temperatures continue up to around 1,600 m elevation. Warmer temperatures than yesterday are forecast, so please stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Rating is as of morning. Caution on very steep terrain, where snow tends to gather and increase in size.
Watch out for slabs that remain in very localized terrain pockets.
Yesterday (23rd), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were reported in the ski cut. Snowballs growing up to about 1 meter in diameter were also observed.
Yesterday's significant temperature increase caused the snow up to the treeline to become moist and wet. As a result, the previous storm snow lost strength and produced large snowballs. At lower elevations, the snow is melting. Meanwhile, the extremely strong winds that had been blowing in the high alpines for several days began to subside yesterday afternoon. Hard old snow has been exposed, and shukabras have also formed.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy skies, rain in some places in the evening, and a daytime high of 21 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -1.4 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no precipitation in the past 24 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), -0.3 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 5 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind of 9 m/s.
