Travel and Terrain Advice

It is a "spring day" with a large amount of yellow dust predicted. High temperatures, similar to the previous day, are forecast, but solar radiation and winds will also affect how much this will reduce the intensity of the surface snow. Keep in mind that snow conditions on the snow surface will vary with elevation, aspect, and time of day. Even if the snow is stable, continue to take risk-reducing actions appropriate to the conditions in the avalanche terrain. This is necessary to develop good behavioral habits and also to reduce accidents in the event of an emergency.

Avalanche Problem

Beware of glide avalanches originating from extreme terrain such as cliffs. Stay clear of slopes with glide cracks and move quickly when passing under them, keeping a good distance between you and your companions.

Rating is as of morning. Note the elevated temperatures during the day and the reduction in snow strength in the upper layers of snowpack due to solar radiation.

概要

Avalanche

Numerous snowballs were reported yesterday (24th).

Snowpack

Yesterday, although the sun was not as strong as the day before yesterday, the snow up to the treeline became moist, or wet. At lower elevations, especially, the upper layer of snowpack became thicker and wetter. On the other hand, in the high alpines, hard old snow is exposed and deep shkabras are also forming.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, clear skies, mornings and evenings, cloudy skies, and a daytime high of 22 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 2.7 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with 1 mm of precipitation in the past 24 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -2.1 °C (as of 5:00) with northerly winds averaging 13 m/s and a maximum of 23 m/s at the moment.
