Temperatures have lowered overnight, creating a surface crust on all aspects. Daily fluctuations in temperature and the freezing level can result in dramatic changes to upper snow pack throughout spring requiring constant evaluation of conditions. A firm surface in the morning can quickly change to wet loose activity if we receive rapid warming or rain events. Take the time to reasses terrain throughout the day as the snowpack changes.
As the freezing levels rise later in the day low volume wet loose activity may be possible in steep terrain.
Glide slab release will remain a concern throughout spring as daytime warming combined with overnight cooling expands these cracks to the point of failure. Avoidance of terrain below these cracks is the best management technique.
No new observations have been reported recently.
A surface freeze overnight with a light dusting of snow in the north of the region caps a saturated upper snow pack caused by previous rain. Typical spring conditions have taken hold of the pack with wet grains mixed with old melt freeze crust on all aspects below 1000 meters.
Light to moderate southerly winds will combine with a mix of snow and rain showers in the early part of the day until the freezing levels rise around lunchtime. We can expect further rainfall overnight.
