We are in the spring snowmelt season. Yesterday, during the foehn event, there were reports of large glide avalanches in other parts of the country; although none have been reported in the Hakuba Valley, we should expect essentially the same snowpack conditions. Even if the rain stops falling, the danger of glide avalanche will not decrease immediately. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks. Although it has been raining, it is not enough to wash away the large amount of yellow sand. A good option today may be to enjoy the nicely groomed courses in the ski resorts.
Avoid slopes with glide cracks. Also, be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks in cliff-like terrain.
Beware of steep terrain. Loose snow avalanches can occur even in forested areas.
Yesterday (27th), there were few people entering the mountains and no reports of avalanches in the mountain areas.
Yesterday (27th), the temperature reached 22°C at 15:00 due to a foehn phenomenon. Snow melting progressed. In addition, light rain has been falling since early today. High temperatures and rainfall have resulted in continuous large amounts of melt water. After the passage of the front, a winter pressure pattern is forecasted to bring cooler temperatures, but the danger of glide avalanches is expected to continue.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, rain until dawn, and daytime highs of 20 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature was 5.3 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and 3.5 mm of precipitation had fallen since dawn. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is 4.1 °C (as of 5:00), with northwest winds averaging 12 m/s and a maximum instantaneous wind of 20 m/s.
