Dangerous conditions continue. Look for the effect of wind on the snow cover as you climb. Weak spots in the snow that have fallen together have not yet been completely resolved, so be especially vigilant and avoid where the wind slabs are forming. Don't be relieved just because the snow surface is stiff and you don't dive too much on rushing skis. Also, in the below treeline where the influence of the wind is weak, the snow is very deep, and it is difficult to move without skis etc. In such a case, even on a small slope, if there is a trap of the terrain at the bottom of it, it will be extremely dangerous. Please do good group management, such as avoiding such places and acting in a state where your friends are in view.
Yesterday (4th), many avalanches caused by storm slabs of size 1-2 were observed and reported in the below treeline. There are no reports above the forest limit because there are no visitors due to stormy weather.
There was a lot of snow on the south side of Hakuba Valley until yesterday morning, but after that, the snowfall also intensified on the north side. It is also settling down now, with snowfall of 40 cm or more at the foot of the mountain in the past three days. The many avalanches observed in the below treeline yesterday are due to vulnerabilities within the snow surface that has been hammered by previous strong winds and hardened or in the snow cover that has fallen together. On the other hand, where the elevation is higher than the upper part of the below treeline, strong winds from the west to the northwest are blowing, and caution is necessary for the formation of wind slabs.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts cloudy occasional sunny weather, snow in some places, northern winds, and a daytime maximum temperature of 0°C (elevation 418m) for the northern part of Nagano prefecture. The temperature is -6℃ (as of 6:00) at the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m).
