The avalanche conditions are heading in a good direction overall, but today we want to pay special attention to the snow that has fallen since the early hours and the new wind slab formed by the northwest to the west winds. Those who raise the elevation above the upper part of the below treeline should be wary of it first. Even if the amount of snowfall is 10 cm, there are terrains that accumulate about 3 to 5 times on the leeward side due to the influence of the wind. If there is an avalanche there, an avalanche of a scale that buries people will occur. Don't forget to check if there is a “terrain trap” below the slope. Clever group management using topography will reduce damage in case of emergency.
There were no reports of a the new avalanche yesterday (6th). In the adjacent Hakuba Mountains, many large-scale avalanches that occurred during previous stormy weather cycles have been observed.
The snow from the previous stormy weather proceeds with sintering and is moving in the direction of stabilization. In places where the elevation is raised, there are places where strong winds remain on the snow surface. From the vicinity to the upper part of the forest limit, information is limited, and uncertainty is high.
The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts the northwest wind, slightly stronger, later, westerly wind, snow, and sometimes cloudy from the afternoon, and the highest temperature of 4℃ (elevation 13m) for the Joetsu region of Niigata prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1310m), the temperature was -8℃ (as of 5:00), and there was a snowfall of 7 cm in the past 12 hours.
