It is a day to take note of the instability that remains in some parts of certain slopes. Snow instability in stormy weather, which causes extensive avalanches, moves in a direction that stabilizes over time. However, the speed varies considerably depending on the slope direction and elevation, so unstable places remain at specific locations on certain slopes. The combination of the place where the terrain is isolated without supporting snow cover and the place where the formation of wind slabs due to crosswinds can be seen will be a place to avoid today. Remember that the snow that forms the wind slab is dense and very heavy. Even a very small avalanche can cause serious injuries such as fractures.
Yesterday (8th), multiple surface generated avalanches seen as windslabs in Alpine have been observed and reported. The direction is south, and the size is 1-2.
It has been observed yesterday that the stormy snow is showing a calm, and the windslab due to snow redistributed by the wind is still locally unstable. Due to yesterday's good weather, the snow surface became damp on slopes that are strongly affected by solar radiation. In places with a high altitude from night to the present day, slightly stronger north-west winds continue to blow, so you need to pay attention to the newly formed slab. Be especially careful on the south and southeast side where the wind rolls in.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts the northern part of Nagano prefecture with northern winds, sunny weather, morning and evening, cloudy, and a high temperature of 5℃ (elevation 418m). At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.3℃ (as of 5:00), and there is no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. In the upper part of the below treeline, there was a snowfall of 5-10 cm at night.
