It is a day to take note of the instability that remains in some parts of certain slopes. Snow instability in stormy weather, which causes extensive avalanches, moves in a direction that stabilizes over time. However, the speed varies considerably depending on the slope direction and elevation, so unstable places remain at specific locations on certain slopes. The combination of the place where the terrain is isolated without supporting snow cover and the place where the formation of wind slabs due to crosswinds can be seen will be a place to avoid today. Remember that the snow that forms the wind slab is dense and very heavy. Even a very small avalanche can cause serious injuries such as fractures. Also, at lower elevations, glide cracks are expanding. Try not to get inside or under such places.
No new avalanche observations were reported yesterday (8th). In the adjacent Hakuba Mountains, avalanches of wind slabs of size 1-2 have been observed on the southern slopes of the Alpine area.
The snow in stormy weather is showing calm, but at high altitudes you still need to be careful about windslabs due to snow redistributed by the wind. In places with a high altitude from night to the present day, slightly stronger north-west winds continue to blow, so it is necessary to suspect the formation of new slabs. In particular, be careful of the terrain on the south and southeast side, where the northwest winds roll in.
The Meteorological Agency forecasts southern winds, daytime, northern winds, cloudy, dawn, snow, and a maximum temperature of 6 degrees (elevation 13 m) for the Joetsu region of Niigata prefecture. We are observing the temperature -2.3℃ (as of 5:00 p.m.) at Myoko Kanzan (altitude 350 m). No new snowfall has been observed in the lower elevation areas in the last 12 hours.
