Travel and Terrain Advice

It's a day with high avalanche conditions. The main concern is in the vicinity of the snow cover surface layer, so as you act, check the condition of the formation of the slab in the surface layer. Avoid steep slopes where wind effects can be seen, places where the terrain does not support snow cover, or places where there are “terrain traps.” Also, don't forget to check if there are any large outbreaks in the upper part of you. Alerts for heavy snow have also been issued, so please make an action plan with that in mind.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 surface avalanche was observed on the south side of the mountain area yesterday (16th). Near an elevation of 1,800 m, on the eastern slope, it is human induced.

Snowpack

Until now, the amount of snowfall has increased in areas close to the west sea, and strong westerly winds have begun to blow. This raises the risk of avalanches even in the eastern regions of the mountains, where snowfall was relatively low.

Weather

The Meteorological Agency forecasts the Joetsu region of Niigata prefecture with a slightly stronger wind in the west, stronger, snow, and a maximum temperature of 3 degrees (elevation 13 m). At Myoko Kanzan (altitude 350 m), the temperature is -3.1℃ (as of 6:00), and there is no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency has announced weather information on heavy snow at 5:33 on February 17, and is forecasting 60 cm snowfall along the mountains in the Joetsu region for 24 hours from 6:00 on the 17th to 6:00 on the 18th.
