Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a very dangerous avalanche condition. Even if the weather shows signs of temporary recovery at the foot of the mountain, don't think that the stability of the snow is getting better along with it. Even at low elevations, large avalanches can occur on large slopes opened to the south and east. Exiting the mountain field requires extremely careful route selection, conservative decision-making, and a large margin of safety using the terrain. At the scene of avalanche safety measures, there is a saying that “avalanches do not distinguish who you are”. Remember that even if you have a lot of mountain experience, the conditions are still high hazard. Also, as we have told you in the situation where avalanches occur, snow in closed areas is unstable even in ski resorts. When gliding on the slopes, please protect the area where you can slide.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (21st) due to severe stormy weather, there were no reports of avalanches occurring in the mountainous area because there were no visitors. However, there is a report that “I heard loud noises multiple times that are thought to be caused by an avalanche.” Also, at ski resorts, there are reports that many shooting cracks and avalanches of size 1-2 storm slabs have occurred not only in the morning but also in the safety management work during the day. The photo of the avalanche is on Twitter (#nadare2022)を参照してください。

Snowpack

Strong snowfall is settling down, but extremely strong northwesterly winds are blowing near the main ridge. Since the cold is in and the low temperature continues, the stabilization of the snow only progresses slowly. Please think that the overall trend is the same as the previous day.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northern Nagano prefecture's northern wind, snow, occasional, cloudy, and maximum temperature of -1℃ (elevation 418m). At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), no new snowfall has been observed in the past 12 hours with a temperature of -6.0℃ (as of 5:00). There was snowfall of about 15 cm in the past 12 hours at an altitude of 1,200 m.
