Travel and Terrain Advice

Pay attention to the instability of the wind slab, which remains locally. Since the hard snow surface is under the slab, it is easy to cause incidents where thin plate-shaped snow near the snow surface breaks, rather than an avalanche in the general image, where the foot is scooped up and slipped down. This can happen in both mountaineering and sliding, so be sure to think about whether there are “terrain traps” such as cliffs below the slope, or whether there are safer routes. The wind is also in the direction where it subsides, and it seems to be a very pleasant spring day. Have a fun holiday

概要

Avalanche

Surface-generated surface avalanches, size 1.5 have been observed and reported on the eastern slope of the Alpine (around 2,500m elevation) yesterday (1st).

Snowpack

In the Alpine area, snowfall until last morning has moved with strong northwesterly winds, forming wind slabs. Since the amount of snowfall was small, the difference between locations is large, such as where hard thawing and freezing surfaces are exposed, and where fresh snow moves to form slabs. Yesterday, heavy snow and smoke were rising on the main ridge line, but now it has subsided, and the wind is getting weaker. On the other hand, where the elevation is lower than the forest limit, the snow surface is hard and frozen due to the influence of radiative cooling.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts the northern part of Nagano prefecture from north wind, sunny weather, and afternoon, sometimes cloudy, and a high temperature of 12℃ (elevation 418m). At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.8℃ (as of 5:00).
