Travel and Terrain Advice

Dangerous avalanche conditions in areas with heavy snowfall. Even at lower elevations, extreme caution is required on the open steep slopes to the east and south-facing slopes. In addition, below treeline, there are numerous "terrain traps" because the snowpack is still shallow. For example, there are holes in the gully, which have been hidden by the current snowfall. Please observe the terrain carefully and consider what lies beneath the fresh snow. Snowfall is forecast to continue. Please plan your activities with this in mind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 1), a size 2 glide avalanche was observed on a south-facing slope at 700 m elevation. No reports have been received in the higher elevation mountain areas due to the low number of people entering the area.

Snowpack

Due to clouds over the Mt. Myoko area, snowfall is heavy only on the northeast side of the mountain area. In this area, the following two areas require caution Steep slopes that are strongly affected by solar radiation, and steep slopes in the shade that have not been affected by the previous day's warming and wind. For the former, check for bonding of new snow with old snow. In the latter, there may be low-density snow under the new snow, creating instability.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwesterly winds, slightly stronger, later westerly winds, snow, and a maximum temperature of 5°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -6°C (as of 5:45 am).
