For those entering the northwest side of the mountain range, watch for new slabs. Don't forget to check for large start zones above you. The southeast side of the mountain range, where there are many ski resorts, still has little snow cover. There are many "terrain traps" in the forest, such as bushes and gullies that have not yet been completely filled. Rather than forcing yourself into the mountains, skiing within the ski area is a good option since the season has only just begun.
No reports of avalanches in mountain areas have been received.
On the northwestern side of the mountain range, around 1,000 m elevation, about 20 cm of snow had fallen by this morning. In this area, watch for new storm slabs. In other areas, the storm snow that began on New Year's Day is settling.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow, and a high of 3°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8°C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 24 hours.
