Heightened avalanche conditions on specific terrain features. Yesterday, strong winds blew so hard that the lifts at the top of the ski area were closed. Be on the lookout for wind slab formations. Observe the snow surface conditions carefully to spot slabs forming on the terrain. Avoid areas with convex rolls or isolated terrains where the terrain does not support the snowpack, which can easily trigger avalanches. The snow is well-cooled and the skiing is still good enough for slower slopes. There is still not enough snow in the lower treeline. Be alert for exposed "terrain traps". Keep to the principle of stopping at safe places, moving at reasonable intervals, and so on. This will reduce the number of accidents in case of emergency. Have a good day.
No new avalanches were reported for observation yesterday (January 5). Due to very strong winds, no one went to the higher elevations, so we have not received any information on the upper areas.
The stormy weather cycle that began on New Year's Day has ended. During this snowfall period, 70-90 cm of snow fell in the upper treeline. In the below treeline, the middle to lower layers of this storm snow are sintering and consolidating well, while the upper layers are still very soft. In addition, the snow on the south face slope has been settling as solar radiation entered the area at lower elevations yesterday. Due to the stormy weather over the past days, the treeline and alpine areas are exposed to strong northwesterly to westerly winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, north winds during the day, clear, sometimes cloudy, snowing in places until early afternoon, with a high of 5°C (418m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.3°C (as of 5:00), with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
