Be aware of unstable slabs that remain in certain terrain, where elements such as very steep slopes, isolated shapes, and convexities combine. And also, note the change in slab properties due to diurnal warming. The mountain is expected to be crowded. Keep an eye out for other groups in avalanche terrain. If there are people below you, you should wait for them to move to a safe area. In the below treeline, the gully is not yet fully filled. Watch out for "terrain traps." Have a good day.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (January 6).
In the treeline and alpine, strong northwest to west winds during the stormy period have shifted the previous snowfall significantly. Older, harder snow surfaces are showing on the ridge where the wind hits, and wind slabs are forming on the downwind side. Yesterday's observations showed limited human stimulus response to wind slab, but caution should still be exercised in areas of easily triggered isolated terrain.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, clear skies, cloudy in the evening, snow in places, and a high of 7°C (418m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -7.8°C (as of 5 am), with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
