In the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, where there has been snowfall so far this morning, watch out for storm slabs or loose snow avalanches formed by new snow. Remember that very soft slabs can occur even in forested areas if the slope is steep enough. Snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoop you off your feet. Even if you feel that the avalanche danger is relatively low, continue to follow the principle of stopping at a safe place and moving at a reasonable interval. This will reduce the number of accidents in the event of an avalanche. Have a good day.
Only the north side of Hakuba Valley where there was snowfall
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (January 7).
In the treeline and alpine areas, wind slabs are forming on terrain localities, but the response to human stimulation has been stubborn and the instability is on the way to dissipation. 15 cm of snow has fallen in the northern end of the Hakuba Valley in relatively light wind conditions from dawn to this morning. Please be aware of the condition of the slabs that this snow forms or the possibility of loose snow avalanches.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, snow in places until early afternoon, and a maximum temperature of 5°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -2.7℃ (as of 5:00), and 2 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
