Travel and Terrain Advice

The skiing on the north side of the mountain range should be aware of storm slabs or loose snow avalanches formed by fresh snowfall. Remember that very soft slabs can occur even in forested areas if the slope is steep enough. The snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoop you off your feet. The skiing on the south side of the mountain range should be aware of "terrain traps". Even if you feel that the avalanche danger is relatively low, please continue to follow the principled course of action of stopping in a safe place and moving at a reasonable interval. This will reduce the number of accidents in case of emergency. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 7), a size 2 glide avalanche was observed on the south slope of a very low elevation area.

Snowpack

Stormy snow has settled and glide avalanches have been observed at lower elevations, where the effects of elevated temperatures and solar radiation are stronger. 5-20 cm of snow had fallen by this morning, mainly in the higher elevation northern part of the Myoko mountain range. Snowfall amounts have varied across elevation zones and areas.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, westerly winds during the day, snow or rain, cloudy from midday, and a high of 7°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4°C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
