Those heading to higher elevations should be aware of old wind slabs that remain in extreme terrain. They are insensitive to human stimulation, but still have the potential to be triggered by large loads on isolated terrain. At lower elevations, be alert for the significant warming and solar radiation effects forecast for today. The risk of wet loose snow avalanches on very steep slopes and glide avalanches on already cracked slopes is increased. Stay well away from slopes with glide cracks. Below treeline, many "terrain traps" are exposed. Be especially vigilant in gully terrain, as there are holes in it. The weather would slowly worsen. Have a good day.
Yesterday (January 8), several size 1 loose snow avalanches were observed due to snowfall since early morning.
The storm snowpack from New Year's Day through January 5 was settled well. And also, the snowfall on the north side of the Hakuba Valley is also settling. The crust formed on January 6 and the recent new snow bonding is not bad. On the other hand, at very high elevations, old wind slabs remain in isolated terrain. The reaction to human stimulation is stubborn, but caution should be exercised on terrain with extreme shape. Significant temperature increases are forecast for today, and their effects should be considered.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the south, clear, then cloudy, night, snow in places, with a high of 10°C (418m elevation) for northern Nagano. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -2.0°C (as of 5 am), with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
