Alpine Fair
Treeline Low Considering the effect of temperature rise
Below Treeline Fair

In the higher elevations of the area, watch out for wind slabs formed by the recent snowfall. At lower elevations, today's elevation increase increases the risk of glide avalanches. Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks. Also, many "terrain traps" are exposed below treeline. Be very alert for holes in the gully bottom.
Yesterday (January 8), a size 3 glide avalanche was observed at a very low elevation.
Conditions vary considerably with elevation. At higher elevations and north of the area, instability from recent snowfall still needs attention. Check for instabilities in stormy snow. Meanwhile, at lower elevations, glide cracks are expanding and larger size glide avalanches are beginning to occur due to the higher temperatures. With higher temperatures than yesterday forecast for today, please consider that the risk of glide avalanches remains high.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the west, slightly stronger, cloudy, rain or snow in the evening, and a high of 12°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -1°C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
