Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Traveling in avalanche terrain in Alpine and Treeline is not recommended. In those elevations, a hard snow surface has formed due to the previous day's strong wind, and there is a large amount of snowfall up to this morning on top of it. Even Below Treeline, cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making are essential. In particular, avoid entering steep slopes that open to the south. It is important to avoid large start zones above you, to choose slopes with moderate slopes, and to avoid "terrain traps". For inexperienced riders, powder snow areas in the ski resort are recommended. In such cases, please observe the areas where skiing is allowed.
Yesterday (January 9), size 1 slab avalanches and shooting cracks due to human triggered were observed on the north and east slopes below treeline. This is because the snowfall from the previous day (January 8) was moved by the wind and formed a slab.
Yesterday (January 9) was a beautiful morning, but extremely windy at higher elevations. In the afternoon, cloudiness prevailed and snowfall began, but it rained from around 1,000 m elevation. In the 12 hours until this morning, about 40 cm of snow had fallen in the upper treeline below. Steep slopes >35° facing south are buried with melt-freeze crust from the good weather on 6 January, a potential concern for persistent slabs. According to the observation on January 8, it is still responding to tests. There is a potential for a large-scale avalanche to occur due to the heavy load imposed by this snowfall.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, cloudy before noon, sunny later, and a high of 2°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.0℃ (as of 5:00am) and 8 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
