It is a pleasant sunny day, but the snow conditions in the mountains are very difficult, and dangerous elements lurk here and there. Please observe your surroundings and look for new avalanche tracks, while acting with adequate and safe route choices. Yesterday, there was obviously instability. In this case, this instability will not dissipate in a day. This is not a day to suddenly jump into a large slope. Start the day on a smaller, slower slope with no large start zone at the top. In the forest, remember that this snowfall is hiding holes in the creek. It is important to make wise use of safer terrain and to manage your group well. Have a good day.
Watch out for wind slabs that form locally inside low-elevation gully terrain, which is not usually affected by wind. Be wary of combinations of convexity and other areas where snow tends to become unstable.
Even Below Treeline, the large, steep, south-facing open slopes have the potential for very large avalanches. In Alpine areas, storm instability remains only locally unaffected slope by the previous day's very strong winds.
Yesterday (January 10), a number of size 1-1.5 avalanches and several size 2s were reported in the morning avalanche control at the ski resort. There is no information on higher elevations due to stormy weather.
A heavy snowfall during the afternoon of January 9 and January 10 resulted in 50-60 cm in the upper part of the treeline. This new snow was poorly bonding with the old snow, causing numerous avalanches below treeline. This storm slab moved violently in the afternoon of the 10th under the influence of a northerly storm, forming a wind slab on the leeward side. The cornice is also forming significantly and extreme snow accumulation is occurring on the leeward side.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, northerly winds, clear skies, and a maximum temperature of 6°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -11.8°C (as of 5 am) and 1 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
