Travel and Terrain Advice

It is a pleasant sunny day, but act with the idea that the instability of yesterday's stormy weather is still present in the snow on the mountain. It is a good idea to start the day on smaller, sloping slopes that do not have large start zones at the top. Observe your surroundings carefully and if you find new avalanches, that is the most important sign of instability. If you do not find an avalanche, use a small, safe, convex slope to confirm its instability. Use terrain wisely and remember the importance of group management. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 10), there was a report of a size 1 avalanche in the management of an explosive device at a ski resort.

Snowpack

In the upper treeline, 40-50 cm of snow fell between January 9 and 10. Then came a very strong wind that shut down the lifts, and the snowpack has been moving violently. There is a high degree of uncertainty regarding the instability of this stormy weather, as there is almost no observational information even in the mountain areas. However, significant instability has been observed in the neighboring Hakuba Mountains, and this trend should be considered in the Myoko Mountains area as well.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, late, southerly winds, clear, sometimes cloudy, with a high of 10° (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -12° (as of 6:15 a.m.).
