Travel and Terrain Advice

Those seeking higher elevations should be aware of the dangers of wind slabs that remain in specific terrains. The combination of slab formations and extreme terrain is where avalanches are most likely to occur. In addition, a significant temperature increase is forecast for today. Remember that on steep south-facing slopes, slabs that were hard in the morning may lose strength and become unstable during the day. Use the terrain wisely and follow a principled course of action. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 11), several size 2-2.5 avalanches were observed in the alpine area in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains, probably during stormy weather.

Snowpack

At higher elevations, strong winds have formed hard wind slabs. Stormy snow is undergoing settling, and the middle layer of snowpack and below has strength.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, daytime, westerly winds, clear, before noon, cloudy, and a maximum temperature of 14° (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
