The danger of glide cracks is increasing at lower elevations. Please stay away from cracked slopes and move quickly when passing below them. The danger of loose snow avalanches also increases with the degree of daytime temperature rise and rainfall. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. If there is a "terrain trap" below you, the consequences can be grave. The weather is downhill and rainfall is forecast. Plan your activities with this in mind.
Note rising temperatures and rainfall during the day
Yesterday (January 13), several size 1 wet loose snow avalanches were observed at lower elevations.
Yesterday, temperatures below 1,800 m were strongly affected by temperature rise and solar radiation, and especially on steep slopes facing south, upper snowpack intensity decreased due to melting. On the north side above 1,500 m, the snow is still dry.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, rain, and sometimes cloudy, with a high of 15°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is 4° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
