At higher elevations, watch for upcoming wind slab formations. Consider whether there are any "terrain traps" below you that could have serious consequences, even if the avalanche is small in size. Below Treeline, wet snow is hard and frozen, making it difficult to ski, and the gully is cracking and pitting as the snow continues to thaw. Many bushes that were buried for a time are now emerging, so be on the lookout for these hazards.
No new avalanches were reported yesterday (January 15).
The snowpack surface is hard and frozen, having become wet or moist from yesterday's elevated temperatures and rainfall. At higher elevations below treeline, the middle and lower layers of the snowpack are strong, unaffected by elevated temperatures and rainfall.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, with occasional snow, and a maximum temperature of 4°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is 0.7℃ (as of 5:00), and 1 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
