Travel and Terrain Advice
Those going up in elevation should be wary of wind slabs formed by yesterday's strong northerly winds. Although the amount of snowfall is low, there is local snow accumulation on the leeward side. It is necessary to consider that a locally formed slab with a shape that is difficult to support the snow cover can induce it. Also, don't forget that in forest, there is a hard surface under the thin layer of fresh snow. Skis may get caught unexpectedly and cause a fall. Snowpack
The upper part of Below Treeline, 10-15 cm of snow has fallen in the past two days, redistributed by yesterday's strong northerly winds. Below Breeline, the snow surface layer, which has melt-Freeze due to high temperatures and rainfall, is frozen solid.
Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, then southerly winds, cloudy, sunny from midday, with a high of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.7℃ (as of 5:00), and 1 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
