Alpine Fair
Treeline Fair
Below Treeline Good
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
At higher elevations exposed to strong winds, hard ice or Melt-Freeze layers due to rainfall are exposed. This situation requires extreme caution to avoid slipping and falling. Wind slabs form just below ridges and in pockets of terrain. The creeks in the forest have many holes due to melting snow, and hard debris is hidden under the thin fresh snow. Although the avalanche hazard is low, the mountain conditions are not pleasant for skiing.
Note the slabs that have formed in pockets of terrain
Yesterday (January 17), several size 1.5 wind slab avalanches were observed on the eastern slopes at the treeline and alpine.
The effects of last weekend's rainfall have reached the alpine areas, and the snow surface is hard frozen with subsequent snow on top of it. After the snowfall, very strong northerly winds blew, exposing icy old snow surfaces in areas exposed to the wind. At higher elevations, wind slabs have formed in isolated terrains.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear, then cloudy, with a high of 5°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -6.7°C (as of 5 am), with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
