At higher elevations and in areas exposed to strong winds, hard ice sheets and Melt-Freeze layers caused by rainfall are exposed. This situation requires extreme caution to avoid slipping and falling. Wind slabs form just below ridges and in pockets of terrain. Many forested gullys have holes in them due to thawing snow, and hard debris is hidden under thin fresh snow in the gullys. Below treeline, numerous glide cracks are open. The gully is also deep due to the low snowfall. Do not rely on past high-season ski trip records.

No reports of avalanches in mountain areas were received yesterday (January 17).
Snowpack
Recent snowfall of 10-20 cm is on top of a hard snow surface that has been affected by rainfall. This significant instability at the interface between new and old snow has not been reported below the treeline at this time. At higher elevations, strong winds have exposed hard Melt-Freeze crusts.
Weather
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, later northerly winds, snow or rain, morning and evening, cloudy, with a maximum temperature of 6°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
