Travel and Terrain Advice

Very dangerous avalanche conditions. We need to be very careful of the storm slabs that have formed from the snowfall since last night. There is a hard bed surface, so even a small avalanche, if triggered, can cause climbers or skiers to slip and fall. In addition, there are uneven hard snow surfaces and holes in the stream bottom hidden under the fresh snow. Choose a low-angle slope and no big start zones above you. Inexperienced skiers are recommended to ski in the ski resort.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (January 20).

Snowpack

The snowfall from the previous evening is on top of the hard frozen surface or old snow. It is about 30 cm Below Treeline. Under the current mountain snowpack conditions, it will take more time than usual for the bonding between the new snow and the old snow to strengthen. Especially on hard, frozen slopes, more time is needed. Hard snow surface also provides a good bed surface for avalanches.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, afternoon and occasional sunshine, snow in places, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.8°C (as of 5:00 am), and 5 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
