Alpine Fair
Treeline Good
Below Treeline Good
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
The conditions are challenging with snow intensity varying widely from place to place. Avoid large slopes with very steep inclines. The snow is cold and dry enough to be enjoyable even at lower slopes. Choose slopes without "terrain traps" below you. In the forest at lower elevations, where snow cover is low, there are many hidden hazards. Please observe the terrain carefully and choose a safe route. Have a good day.
Be alert for places where the upper snowpack has a tendency to slab.
Very steep slope with no wind effect
Yesterday (January 21), a size 2 storm slab avalanche was remotely triggered at the treeline, elevation 2,250 m, south slope. Whumpfing sounds were also reported on the south slope near elevation 1,900 m. Below Treeline, a size 1 storm slab avalanche was human-triggered on a very steep slope.
There is about 30 cm of storm snow from the evening of January 20 to the morning of January 21 on top of a hard melt-freeze crust, with large grain size new snow trapped in the lower layer of storm snow. This may be the cause of the whumpfing sound and remote triggering. The snow is very light Below Treeline this morning due to good radiative cooling.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the north, sunny, sometimes cloudy, with a high of 5°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -12.0°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
