Conditions vary in snow intensity from place to place. Avoid large slopes with very steep inclines. Choose slopes that have no "terrain traps" below you. In the forest or at lower elevations, where snow cover is less intense, there are many hidden hazards. Observe the terrain carefully and choose a safe route. Have a good day.
Watch out for very steep slopes with increasing slab tendencies.
Yesterday (January 21), a size 1 storm slab avalanche was observed on the northeast slope of Below Treeline. In addition, a size 2 avalanche was remotely triggered on the southern slope of the treeline in the adjacent Hakuba Mountains area.
The snowfall since the evening of the 20th is on top of the hard frozen or old snow. It is about 30 cm Below Treeline. At lower elevations, we are observing better bonding of new and old snow, but at higher elevations, we still need to be vigilant.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, westerly during the day, cloudy, with occasional snow or rain, and a maximum temperature of 6°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
