Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a low avalanche danger day, but be alert for isolated and extremely shaped terrain. Heavy snowfall is forecasted associated with a very strong cold air inflow. Consider a quick escape to the foothills in the event of any incidents. Descend the mountain before the weather starts to get rough. There are numerous "terrain traps" in the forest. Imagine what is under the snow cover and choose a safe route.

Weak layer formation is uneven and may be activated by future heavy snowfall. Tracks of other people's skis are not an indicator of stability.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (January 23).

Snowpack

At elevations between 1,800 m and 2,300 m, faceted snow is forming on top of the Melt-Freeze crust formed by the January 14 rainfall. This weak layer has been implicated in several avalanches and incidents that occurred on January 21, and as of January 23, it is still showing a noted response in snowpack tests. The extent of this faceting snow formation has been observed over a wide area of the Hakuba Valley, although it varies by aspect. It is also more pronounced on the southern slopes at higher elevations. At this time, caution should be exercised only in the more triggering localities, such as isolated terrain, but be aware of the potential for larger avalanches in the future, depending on snowfall.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then slightly stronger winds from the north, cloudy, with snow in the afternoon, and a high of 6°C (418m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.5°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Observatory issued a weather advisory on heavy snowfall for northern Nagano Prefecture at 16:52 on January 23. This information predicts 60-80 cm of snowfall in the 24-hour period from 18:00 on January 24 to 18:00 on January 25.
