Dangerous avalanche conditions. Watch out for storm slabs that have formed from the snowfall up to this morning. The snow has cooled and is in very good condition, so low-angle slopes can be enjoyable. When visibility is poor, think carefully about whether there are any large start zones above you. Principle behaviors, such as stopping at safe spots and skiing one at a time, will reduce the damage of accidents. "Terrain traps" lurk in the forest. Imagine what is under the snowpack and choose a safe line.
New storm slab formed by snowfall up to this morning. Note that the snowfall is being driven by southwest winds.
On a very steep slope
Whumpfing sounds and hazardous test results (Sudden Collapse) due to FCs formed on top of Melt-Freeze crusts formed by rainfall on January 14 has been observed continuously since January 21. In wind-affected areas, this instability is occurring only in isolated pockets within a given slope, making it difficult to recognize the hazard.
Visibility was poor from the upper Below Treeline yesterday (January 26) and no new avalanche reports have come in. However, there were reports of hearing whumpfing sounds.
The snowpack has a pretty big spatial variability. In wind-affected slopes, very hard Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the January 14 rainfall are exposed, while in other slopes, 20 cm of new snow up to this morning is on top of the recent storm snow. Overall, the snow from the January 24-25 storm is settling and no significant instability has been observed Below Treeline.
