Travel and Terrain Advice

In all elevation zones, be on the lookout for storm slabs or loose snow avalanches that have formed from the snowfall up to this morning. The most important aspect of avalanche protection is the relationship between slope and terrain. Even if the snow tends to be stable, if the terrain is not conducive to supporting the snowpack and the slope is very steep, avalanches can often be triggered by human stimulation. Observe the terrain carefully to see where the soft slabs formed by the snowfall up to this morning are located. And please continue to follow the general rule of action of skiing one at a time and stopping in safe zones. The weather is getting worse. Plan your activities with this in mind.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (January 29), an avalanche incident of size 2 or larger (details to be confirmed) occurred on the eastern slope of Tenguhara (around 2,100m elevation). No other avalanche or other important information has been reported in the treeline and Below Treeline. In addition, there are no reports of alpines due to poor visibility. If you have any information about the incident, please send or contact us for the investigation.

Snowpack

Snowfall (30-60 cm) from the evening of Jan. 27 to noon of Jan. 28 is advancing settling; there were no signs of instability Below Treeline on Jan. 29. On the other hand, at the Treeline, a slab was forming due to the westerly winds. Here is the snowfall (20 cm below treeline) up to this morning. Yesterday evening, low cohesion crystals were observed at the beginning of the snowfall, and although the overall snowfall is low, we need to be very vigilant where slabs are forming on top of that snow. Melt-Freeze crusts formed by the January 14 rainfall, which are under continuous observation, remain a concern.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, cloudy, snowy from midday to early afternoon, and a high of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.9℃ (as of 5:00), and 13 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
