Very dangerous avalanche conditions. We need to be very alert for storm slabs affected by westerly winds. The condition of the interface between new and old snow, or instability within the new snow, must be carefully assessed. The easiest and most effective means of avalanche safety is to choose slopes with slopes of 30° or less. Also, consider whether there is a large start zone above you. For little experienced skiers, this is a good day to enjoy fresh powder snow in the ski area. Please ski only on courses where skiing is permitted. There have been no avalanche fatalities in Japan in the past 25 years on open runs in ski resorts. This is a proud achievement compared to ski resorts in Europe or North America. This safety is protected by the ski patrol on a daily basis.
Yesterday (Feb. 1), a size 1 slab avalanche caused by a ski cut was observed in isolated terrain. A size 1 loose snow avalanche was also reported due to enhanced snowfall in the afternoon.
The upper snowpack was sufficiently settling by the fine warm weather from January 31 to February 1. Snowfall started around noon on February 1, bringing 30-50 cm of new snow Below Treeline by this morning. Snowfall amounts are higher in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley. The new snow is accumulating under the influence of strong westerly winds throughout the area.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow until dawn, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -4.4°C (as of 5:00 am) and 17 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
