A fatal accident occurred in the Mt. Hotaka-san area and several avalanches have been observed in the Tanigawa-dake area. Be careful on storm slabs where bonding has not progressed. Be careful of triggering on open steep slopes where there are few trees, or where there is a sudden change in slope, or on steep slopes just below a ridge or a branch ridge. Watch for avalanches from large start zones overhead, even if you yourself are on a low slope. There are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep gullies, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase damage even if the size of the generated avalanche is small.
Yesterday, one person died in an avalanche accident in an alpine in the Mt. Muson area. Details are under investigation. There were reports of multiple slab avalanche sizes 1-1.5, both spontaneous and human-triggered, observed between the treeline and alpine areas in the Tanigawa-dake area.
On the southerly steep slopes, 30-50 cm of snowfall with strong westerly winds from the 2nd is expected to be on top of crusts, and on the northerly slopes, on top of old snow that has been settling.
As of 4:00 pm, there has been no snowfall in the past 24 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a low pressure system over the Sea of Japan is expected to pass through the Tohoku region and reach the Sanriku coast in the evening. The forecast also predicts cloudy and sometimes sunny skies with some snow showers in the evening in the northern part of the country due to the influence of a pressure trough and moist air.
