Note the instability of storm snow that remains in certain terrains. If you see drifting snow, consider that a wind slab is currently forming. Elevated temperatures are forecast for today. At lower elevations, watch for slopes with glide cracks already in place. The principle courses of action, such as stopping in a safe position and moving quickly out of the danger zone, are the same whether it is a surface avalanche or a glide avalanche. There are many "terrain traps" hidden in the forest. Look for safe routes. Have a good day.
Note very low elevation and slopes with glide cracks already in place.
No new avalanche reports were received yesterday (February 5).
Yesterday, the new snow that was 30-40 cm at the treeline has settled due to solar radiation and elevated temperatures. At very low elevations, this new snow is on a wet snow surface.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, westerly winds during the day, cloudy, and occasionally sunny until late afternoon, with a high of 10° (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -9° (as of 4:45 a.m.).
