Generally safe avalanche conditions. In the alpine, watch out for wind slabs on isolated terrain features. It is important to consider that these windslabs are not very reactive to human stimulation, but can be triggered in extreme slops. Also, warmer temperatures than yesterday is forecast. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
Yesterday (February 6), a human-triggered loose snow avalanche of size 1-1.5 was observed in the afternoon. This was due to solar radiation and elevated temperatures.
The recent snowfall of 20-40 cm was further enhanced by yesterday's favorable weather conditions, which further promoted settling. Crusts formed on south-facing slopes, and on north-facing slopes at lower elevations, the snow surface was wet. In Alpine, hard wind slabs, dull to human stimulation, have formed in localized areas, such as just below the ridge line.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sometimes sunny, with a high of 10°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -2.7°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
