Generally safe avalanche conditions. In the alpine, watch out for wind slabs on isolated terrain features. Below Treeline, stay away from slopes with glide cracks. The little amount of snowfall this season, so at lower elevations, the original terrain is exposed, and there are also many holes in the gully bottoms. There are many hazards other than avalanches, so please assess the "terrain trap" elements and choose a safe route. The weather is slowly getting worse. Plan your activities with this in mind.
Hard wind slabs formed on extreme terrain features
Yesterday (February 7), several size 1 loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches were observed below treeline. All were caused by high temperatures and strong solar radiation.
At higher elevations, where winds are stronger, the previous Melt-Freeze layer is exposed, and on the leeward side, hard wind slabs have formed on isolated terrain features. On steep slopes, which are strongly influenced by solar radiation and temperature, about 10 cm of the snow surface layer has become sufficiently wet to cause yesterday's loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches. Even on the northern slopes where there was dry snow, at lower elevations, the snow has turned moist.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow in the evening, and a maximum temperature of 8°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is 1.0°C (as of 5:00), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
