Dangerous avalanche conditions. Carefully check the bonding strength of the interface between new and old snow. The rate of improvement in instability depends on elevation, aspect, and slope characteristics. Starting the day on a slope that is simple, small, and free of terrain traps is a good idea. The weather is improving, but continue to make careful terrain decisions until you descend. Stick to the principle behaviors of stopping at safe areas, skiing one person at a time, and spacing out. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy the fresh snow in the ski area.
Be on the lookout for a storm slab that formed while under the influence of northwesterly winds. A distinct instability was observed and reported yesterday afternoon when the slab began to form. Since the snow is large in grain size and low in cohesion, slope selection should be based on the assumption that the instability has not improved today.
A human-triggered size 1 slab avalanche was reported yesterday afternoon (February 8) at the Treeline. There was also a shooting crack. These were all caused by snow that started falling in the morning.
Snowfall from yesterday morning (February 8) intensified in the afternoon, forming storm slabs in areas affected by the wind. It was responding to human stimulation. Snowfall is more in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, 20-30 cm at around 1,000 m elevation. Please check the bonding of the interface with the old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy, sometimes sunny, snowy in places until early afternoon, and a high of 3°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -3.6°C (as of 5:00 am), with 3 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours.
