The instability of the snowpack that remains in isolated terrain still requires caution. Avoid convex or isolated terrain where slab formation is suspected, and use simple terrain that is less susceptible to wind. Even if you feel that the snowpack is stable, continue to follow the principle of stopping in safe areas and skiing one person at a time. This will minimize accidents. The weather is clearly worsening. When it starts to snow, go down the mountain early.

Yesterday (February 9), a size 1.5 slab avalanche was observed on the northeast face of the Below Treeline. The avalanche was human-triggered. Shooting cracks have also been reported.
Stormy snow (10-25 cm) during the afternoon of Feb. 8 and morning of Feb. 9 is being driven by very strong northwest winds. As a result, snow accumulation is higher on the southeast side. On the ridge tops where the wind is stronger, old Melt-Freeze layers are exposed in some areas, and hard wind slabs have formed below the ridge line in others. Overall, the bonding strength between new and old snow is improving, but caution is still needed in isolated terrain.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, snow, and a maximum temperature of 1°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -5.4°C (as of 5am), with no snowfall in the past 12 hours.
