Travel and Terrain Advice

Dangerous avalanche conditions. A clear instability pattern is coming. Be alert for instability on storm slabs formed by yesterday's snow. Use a small safe convex terrain feature to check the conditions. The large south-facing slopes have the potential for large avalanches due to Melt-Freeze crusts under storm snow. Reduce the slope angle and use simple terrain. On very steep slopes without wind influence, loose snow avalanche conditions are possible even in forested areas. Avalanches in the forest cause serious trauma. The mountain is expected to be crowded, so please increase your terrain awareness and safe group management even more than usual.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (February 10), partly due to poor visibility.

Snowpack

Yesterday (February 10), a low cohesive snowfall accompanied the passage of a low-pressure system. Snowfall amounts were 20-30 cm in the upper part of the Below Treeline, with more in the southern part of the Hakuba Valley. Snowfall was largely over by early morning today, followed by northwest winds. This snowfall pattern will form an "upside down" snowpack structure, with wind-drift dense snow on top of low-density snow. Clear instability is likely to appear.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, sunny, occasionally cloudy, and a high of 5°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is 0.7°C (as of 5:00), with 2 cm of snow falling in the past 12 hours.
