Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for storm slabs formed by new snowfall. Use small, safe, convex terrain and check for bonding with the old snow. When visibility is poor, it is important to consider whether there is a large start zone above you. When taking a break, look around and make sure you are not in avalanche terrain. With high temperatures, there is a risk of glide avalanches at lower elevations. Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks in them.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 10), there are reports of observations of snowballs and old glide avalanches at lower elevations. At higher elevations, there are no reports of new avalanches, partly due to poor visibility. On the other hand, shooting cracks have been observed around the ridge where winds are strong.

Snowpack

The low-pressure system that brought heavy snowfall to the Kanto area had a small impact in the Myoko area. At higher elevations, there was about 10-15 cm of snowfall under the winter pressure pattern after the low pressure moved out to the east, and the formation of a storm slab is suspected.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a north wind, later, south wind, cloudy, later, sunny, with a high of 9° (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -2° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
