Except at higher elevations, the mountains are quickly taking on the appearance of spring. In the Alpine, you need to be aware of wind slabs that remain in isolated terrain features. On lower elevation and sunny slopes, be on the lookout for wet loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches. Wet snow is very heavy and easily scoots underfoot. Last season, there were two incidents of people being swept away by small wet loose snow avalanches and falling into glide cracks. The key point in this incident is not only that it was washed away, but that there was a "terrain trap" lower down the slope. Significant warming is forecast compared to the previous day, so please stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks in them. Have a good day.
Note slabs formed in isolated terrain features. Be aware of places where the terrain is extremely shaped to not support snowpack.
Keep in mind high daytime temperatures and solar radiation
Stay away from slopes that are already cracked.
Yesterday (February 11), several size 1.5-2.5 slab avalanches were observed on the eastern slopes of the Alpine and Treeline. Below Treeline, numerous size 1-1.5 wet loose snow avalanches were observed on slopes strongly affected by sunny slopes.
Yesterday, high temperatures and strong solar radiation caused the stormy snow to settle quickly, wetting the sunny slopes and forming crusts in all directions at the lower elevations.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, clear, occasionally cloudy, and a high of 11°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -5.5°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
