Travel and Terrain Advice

Conditions require careful route selection and conservative decision-making. Be aware of bonding storm slabs that are forming due to snowfall with strong winds since yesterday. Be careful of triggering on steep slopes with few trees or where there are sudden changes in slopes just below the ridge or branch ridges. Be aware of avalanches from large start zones overhead, even if you yourself are on a low slope. Winter conditions are forecast to continue. Please act with caution to watch for new snowfall and wind effects.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday, a small loose snow avalanche on a steep south-facing slope below treeline and a small slab avalanche on a steep northwest-facing slope were observed. Both were induced by skiers.

Snowpack

New storm slabs are expected to form due to snowfall with strong northwesterly winds since yesterday mid-day. Low density snowfall is being reported at the boundary of this snowfall, so caution should be exercised in bonding.

Weather

As of 4:00 pm, 16 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours at AMeDAS Fujiwara and 30 cm at AMeDAS Yuzawa. Snowfall with wind continues in the Fujiwara area. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy and sometimes sunny skies with snow showers in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture from midday to late afternoon as the winter pressure pattern continues and the area is affected by a pressure trough and cold air.
