Below Treeline Fair
信頼度:○ good □ Fair △ Low
Please consider that the storm instability is continuing and act accordingly. The old snow has been contaminated by yellow dust, so it will be easy to assess the amount of snowfall since the 13th. As of yesterday, in the Below Treeline, the interface between new and old snow was not good only on slopes where the wind was strong. Information on slopes at higher elevations is lacking, so please observe carefully. Also, very strong winds were blowing during the night. Be on the lookout for slips on icy hard slopes as well as the danger of wind slabs formed by this wind.
Very strong north to northwest winds were blowing during the night.
Particular attention should be paid in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, which has experienced heavy snowfall.
No new avalanches were observed in the mountains yesterday (February 14), partly due to poor visibility. On the other hand, avalanches 20-40 cm thick were observed in the ski areas during the control operations.
In the forest zone and Below Treeline, new snow from the 13th is on top of a yellow-sand-stained crust surface. The amount of new snow since the beginning of the downpour is high only in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley (40-50 cm) and slight in the southern part. The new snow is influenced by the northerly winds, which were strong on some slopes and reacted yesterday with human stimulation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow in places, and a maximum temperature of 0°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation Hakuba, the temperature was -6.7°C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and 3 cm of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours. At AMeDAS Kotani (elevation 550 m), 5 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. Snowfall has been heavy only at the northern end of Hakuba Valley. At elevations around 1,000 m, there have been about 20 cm of new snow in the past 12 hours.
