Travel and Terrain Advice

Be alert for storm slabs formed by the significant snowfall since February 13. Avoid convex or isolated terrain where the terrain is not conducive to supporting snowpacks. Also, when visibility is poor, pay attention to the start zones that exist above you. Whenever you stop or rest on the way up, be sure to be outside of avalanche terrain. For beginner riders, enjoying powder snow in the ski area is a good option. When doing so, please ski with a companion and observe the areas where skiing is allowed.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were observed in the mountains yesterday (February 14) due to poor visibility. On the other hand, several size 2 avalanches were observed during avalanche management operations at the ski resort.

Snowpack

New snow from February 13 is on top of the old snow surface, which was wet and frozen by high temperatures and rainfall. The amount of this new snow has generally reached 50-70 cm and has been deposited under the influence of northerly winds. The boundary surface between the new and old snow and the instability present within the new snow are conditions that require attention.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, snow, and a high of 2°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -11° (as of 5:45 a.m.).
