Even if the weather improves, this is not a day to let down your guard against the avalanche danger. It has been observed that the new snow is settling, but underneath this new snow is a hard Melt-Freeze crust, and as of yesterday, it has been observed that the new snow and crust have not yet developed sufficient bonding strength. In fact, there have been avalanches triggered by skiers. This is not a day to jump into big steep slopes. Look for simple terrain that is less affected by wind, use gentle slopes of 30° or less, and avoid areas with convex or isolated terrain where the snowpack can easily become unstable. Please continue with basic behaviors such as stopping in safe areas and skiing one person at a time.
Yesterday (February 15), a size 2 storm slab avalanche was reported on the south slope of the Below Treeline. It was accidentally triggered by sliding. In the nearby northern area of the Hakuba Valley, several size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were reported in the Treeline.
New snow from February 13 is on top of the old snow surface, which was wet and frozen by high temperatures and rainfall. The amount of this new snow has generally reached 70-90 cm and has been deposited under the influence of north-to-northwest winds. It has been observed that the new snow is settling, but it is not yet strong enough. This instability cause a size 2 slab avalanche yesterday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northwest winds, later westerly, cloudy, snow until dawn, and a maximum temperature of 3°C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -11° (as of 5:45 am).
