Travel and Terrain Advice

Beware of unstable snow remaining on extreme terrain features or very steep slopes. Even small avalanches can have serious consequences if there are "terrain traps" with cliffs, glide cracks, trees, or rocks below the slope. The weather is stable and avalanche danger is low, so this is a good day to venture up to higher elevations, but be careful to avoid slipping and falling as the wind can make the snow hard in many areas. Remember that wide skis and split snowboards are vulnerable to hard slopes. With good visibility, observe the terrain carefully and reacquaint yourself with avalanche terrain and safe zones. Then continue to use safe terrain to get around. If you can't do proper route setting in good weather, there is no way you can move wisely in storm weather. There is still good snow on the slopes that are less affected by wind and sunny slopes. Have a good day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 16), several size 1-2.5s were observed in the northern area of the Hakuba Valley, probably during stormy weather. Elevation was 1,700 - 2,600 m in all aspects.

Snowpack

Snow that fell between February 13 and the morning of February 15 (about 40 cm), mainly in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, has been observed to be settling and sintering. Underneath this new snow, there are Melt-Freeze crusts contaminated with yellow sand, and it seems that there are still localized areas where the bonding strength with the new snow has not yet fully increased. On the other hand, in the southern areas where there has been little snowfall, the new snow has been blown away by the north-to-northwest winds, exposing hard snow surfaces in very many places.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, later northerly wind, clear, sometimes cloudy, with a high of 8°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -8.4°C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
